Faith Thinkers: 30 Christian Apologists You Should Know

Robert M. Bowman Jr.
DeWard, 2019

Faith ThinkersFor 2,000 years, Christians passionate to share the truth about Jesus with other people have thoughtfully done so through books. The technical term for such persons is apologists—meaning those who give a defense—but we could call them “faith thinkers.” They engage in what the fifth-century apologist Augustine called “faith seeking understanding.”

Augustine is one of the 30 “faith thinkers” profiled here, in
each case focusing on one of that apologist’s most famous
books. Most readers will be able to read one of these profiles, each of which is just a few pages long, in ten minutes or less. From Luke’s book Acts of the Apostles in the first century to Lee Strobel’s The Case for Christ at the end of the 20th century, you will get a clear overview of the history of Christian faith thinkers. The book introduces 15 apologists from the first through the nineteenth centuries, then 15 apologists of the twentieth century. Becoming familiar with the works of these 30 thinkers will prepare you to participate meaningfully in a 2,000-year-old conversation.

Here are some things Christian scholars are saying about Faith Thinkers:

“Christianity has never lacked articulate defenders, but many people today have forgotten their own heritage. Rob Bowman’s book offers readers of all backgrounds an easy point of entry to this deep and vibrant literature. I wish every pastor knew at least this much about the faithful thinkers of past generations!”
Timothy McGrew
Professor of Philosophy, Western Michigan University
Director, Library of Historical Apologetics

“This is a fantastic little book, written by the perfect person to write it. Bowman’s new Faith Thinkers offers a helpful ‘Who’s Who’ of the great Christian apologists of history and is an excellent resource for students of apologetics!”
James K. Dew Jr.
President, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary

“Rob Bowman’s brief but very informative book Faith Thinkers: 30 Christian Apologists You Should Know provides a great introduction to key thinkers in the history of Christendom. It serves as a crash course to historical theology and apologetics, and it summarizes many classic Christian texts. This work is chock full of very important information for today’s Christian.”
Kenneth Samples, Vice President of Apologetics, Reasons to Believe
Author, Classic Christian Thinkers

“Finally—an accessible introduction to many of history’s most influential defenders of the
Christian faith and their legacy. Always interesting (and often surprising), Robert Bowman’s Faith Thinkers will give a new generation of readers a greater appreciation for the remarkable men who laid the groundwork for today’s apologetics renaissance. Highly recommended.”
